O’Connor found out about his selection on Friday morning, just ahead of the official squad announcement. After bumping into Schmidt in Brisbane. Everyone was already at the hotel and seemed to know, he said. Schmidt mentioned he’d tried calling me — I hadn’t seen it because I was at the visa office — then he shook my hand and gave me the news.

The 35-year-old, who is due to traffic to Leicester Tigers next season, said he has been anxious since the news. It still doesn’t feel real, to be honest, O’Connor admitted. I’ve been working toward this moment for quite some time, shaping my game and mindset during Super Rugby with the hope of being ready for a possible shot at the Lions series.

Wallabies Coach Joe Schmidt Highlights O’Connor’s Readiness Despite

Schmidt noted that although O’Connor hasn’t played for him yet with the Wallabies, they’ve maintained regular contact throughout the year. He had a solid Super Rugby season with the Crusaders and remained engaged the whole time, the coach said. He hasn’t been completely out of the loop, but there’s still some catching up to do.

The opening for O’Connor, who played for the Wallabies against the Lions on their preceding Australian tour in 2013, appeared due to the nonappearance of first-choice No. 10 Noah Lolesio. The 25-year-old underwent neck surgery this week after sustaining the injury during a tackle in Sunday’s match against Fiji.

You never like to see someone go down, but Noah’s injury opened up a doorway for me. O’Connor said. Even so, I never truly believed I’d made it, so to be here right now, with the opportunity to join this group of men, feels incredibly special. I am bloody excited. O’Connor sped back into contention after a strong term as a finisher for the Crusaders.

James O’Connor Eyes Second British and Irish Lions Tour

He was part of the squad that went on to win the Super Rugby Pacific title. The experienced playmaker, who started at fly-half for the Wallabies during the 2013 Lions series, now aims to add to his 64 test caps at age 35. Both O’Connor and prop James Slipper are set to join a rare group of players to represent Australia in the two Lions series, succeeding the British and Irish Lions Tour series.

While O’Connor looks to be Schmidt’s third choice axle after Ben Donaldson and Tom Lynagh, the 64-cap veteran could demonstrate valuable contributions both as a mentor in provisions during the three-Test His veteran presence is also valuable coming off the bench. “His experience supported Tom Lynagh last year at Suncorp Stadium and with the Reds,” Schmidt noted.

That experience can hypothetically help the players again, mainly our young 10s as they continue to progress. Brumbies winger Corey Toole and Western Force backrower Nick Winner de Crespigny are the squad includes just two uncapped players, with a breakdown of 20 forwards and 16 backs. Schmidt acknowledged that facing the Lions will be a significant challenge.

Wallabies Build Depth and Power as Jake Gordon Targets

There’s power, and there’s asset in depth, and a skill to play at a pace we’ve seen just unpick teams, mainly in that last sector or that second half of games, he said. First-choice halfback Jake Gordon is still recovering from a restricted injury, but Schmidt has said he is on the path to play in the Lions opener alongside Rob Valetini and Will Skelton.

The Lions remain undefeated on their current tour of Australia, despite falling 28-24 to Argentina in their farewell match in Dublin last month. They recently secured a 36-24 win over the ACT Brumbies on Wednesday and are set for one final warm-up against an Australia-New Zealand Invitational XV in Adelaide this Saturday.

As a coaching group, we’ve aimed to strike a balance between consistency, current form, and fresh energy, Schmidt said. There were some incredibly close decisions. British and Irish Lions Tour Larkham to Wallabies Target Russell

Stephen Larkham says Wallabies can pick up from the Brumbies' forfeiture to the British and Irish Lions Tour. Pick a knowledgeable flyhalf, mind Finn Russell, and maybe cut downhearted on contestable kicks. Such is Stephen Larkham's instruction for the Wallabies to take down heartened the British & Irish Lions.

Larkham's ACT Brumbies cut down 36-24 to the Lions in their tour competition in Canberra on Wednesday, but Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt. Inspecting the throng will have been encouraged by the performance. Though starved of proprietorship and playing without just about all of their Wallabies.

The Brumbies scored four well-crafted tries against Andy Farrell’s side. This featured a strong Leinster presence and consistently disrupted them at the breakdown with key turnovers. The effort and intensity from our entire squad were exceptional, coach Stephen Larkham told reporters. Hopefully, we’ve highlighted a few areas that the Wallabies coaches and players might look to target moving forward.

Praises Brumbies Captain Ryan Lonergan Ahead of 2025 Tour

Having served as both a Wallabies fly-half and coach, Larkham understands what’s required to defeat the Lions. He played a key role in Australia’s 2-1 series win over the Lions in 2001. Over a decade later, he returned to the scene as an assistant coach under Brumbies head coach Jake Silvery. When they took dejected Warren Gatland's Lions 14-12. On Wednesday, Larkham was occupied of commendation for captain-scrumhalf Ryan Lonergan.

Larkham's first-choice flyhalf Noah Lolesio was not once a chance to play, having been conscripted into the Wallabies camp, and the 25-year-old is currently out of the Lions' sequences after spinal surgery. That has left Schmidt with a choice of inexpert flyhalves or calling up a deep-rooted warrior like James O'Connor or Bernard Foley into his squadron.

Larkham suggested he would err on the side of involvement if it were his conclusion. You need a halfback and flyhalf pairing that can stay composed under pressure,” he said. There are options to choose from. I think part of me would like to see development for the forthcoming in that planetary, but equally, I'd wish to beat these guys.

Larkham Analyzes British and Irish Lions Tour Performance

In his assessment of the British and Irish Lions Tour. Larkham believed the Brumbies had managed to contain flyhalf Finn Russell reasonably well, even though the Scottish playmaker played a key role in most of the Lions’ five tries at Canberra Stadium. Larkham admitted that not everything went to plan, noting that the Lions were particularly solid under the high ball.

A string of poorly timed injuries and a narrow escape against Fiji haven’t exactly boosted faith in the Wallabies’ chances against the Lions. Still, Stephen Larkham refused to share in the pessimism.
He expressed confidence in versatile forward Rob Valetini. Who missed the Fiji clash due to a calf issue, describing him as a fast healer and a crucial figure for both the Brumbies and Wallabies moving forward.

While the Lions' scrum has mostly subjugated Australia's provincial edges. Larkham said the Wallabies' Mike Cron was among the best scrum registrars going around. Some of rugby's biggest names are advising Joe Schmidt to turn to involvement to steer the Wallabies ship against the British and Irish Lions.

Wallabies Coach Joe Schmidt Considers Ben Donaldson

Wallabies coach Schmidt needs a new No.10 after Noah Lolesio underwent surgery for an injury agonized in the 21-18 win over Fiji in Newcastle on Sunday. Schmidt spoke absolutely about Ben Donaldson's involvement after he swapped Lolesio in the second half. Tom Lynagh was the third five-eighth in the Wallabies squad for Fiji.

Schmidt also passed Tane Edmed, who is in the AUNZ Invitational XV squad to play the Lions in Adelaide on Saturday - a Test debut against Ireland last year. But mythological ex-Lions coach Sir Ian McGeechan offered a diverse name as Schmidt cooks to name his revised Lions squad in Brisbane on Friday. The first Lions Test is at Suncorp Stadium on July 19.

First Test scenario, I'd go with experience and maybe (James) O'Connor's the physical in-form player," McGeechan said on Sky Sports. You need to make a good jump, and you need to get the whole team behind the conclusion makers. And then the undeveloped players, Donaldson, Lynagh, could come into the picture far along.

Wallabies playmaker Lolesio ruled out of British and Irish Lions Tour

Wallabies Blow as Noah Lolesio Ruled Out of British and Irish Lions Tour Series After Injury. Australia’s playmaker, Noah Lolesio, has been officially ruled out of the upcoming British and Irish Lions tour series following surgery. The injury blow follows Lolesio being carried off on a stretcher during the Wallabies’ tight 21-18 win against Fiji in Newcastle on Sunday, after taking a significant hit in the second half.

While the ACT Brumbies ace was initially vacant of a serious open neck injury, he was readmitted to hospital on Tuesday for supplement surgery. The Wallabies didn't reveal any supplementary details of his damage, but said the 25-year-old would spend an old-fashioned of time away from the game and was expected to make a full recovery.

Lolesio's injury incomes he may have played his last Test for Australia, having contracted to play in Japan. The Wallabies will name their squad for the three-Test Lions series on Friday, with the first match in Brisbane on July 19, with childlike duo Tom Lynagh and Ben Donaldson now probable to tussle to clothing the No 10 jersey.

Johnny Sexton Weighs in on Wallabies

Speaking in advance of the Lions clash with the Brumbies in Canberra on Wednesday night, Lions subordinate coach Johnny Sexton was asked his judgment on the Lolesio's fly-half candidates would be sidelined from selection. Under the guidance of Wallabies head coach Joe Schmidt, Lolesio had earned a starting role in 11 out of 13 Test matches. However, he will now be unavailable for upcoming fixtures.

I think Lynagh has been exceptional all year. I think they're both superior players, Sexton said. But perceptibly, Lolesio is their number one based on their last 10 games. He played in the widely held of the immense games under Joe [Schmidt], so he'll know Joe's way. So, he'll do them some damage.

The former Lions No. 10 refused to chew when asked if he was astounded Schmidt opted not to select veteran playmaker James O'Connor. I'm not going to inquire about Joe Schmidt's collection, which is probably what you're hoping for, and create an important, he said. Despite optimism of a fairytale worldwide farewell, O'Connor also missed out on a berth with the AUNZ Invitational.

Owen Farrell Joins British and Irish Lions Tour Mid-Tour Despite Layoff,

The touring side hasn’t hesitated to call upon their seasoned fly-half, British and Irish Lions Tour, Owen Farrell. In a decisive selection, Lions head coach Andy Farrell has brought his 33-year-old son into the squad, banking on his experience and leadership. Squad mid-way done the tour after Elliot Daly poor his arm against the Queensland Reds. Though Farrell hasn't had fun in 10 weeks since grief a concussion with French side Racing 92.

And has not been used by England in virtually two years, Sexton supported him to make an immediate impression in his fourth Lions tour. As you'd expect with a big shot with that experience, he's fitted in. He must have had the playbook on the plane on the method over for the reason that he came in and he's not misused a weary, Sexton said.

He’s been sharp and fully engaged during training, which is exactly why Andy Farrell chose a high-profile player with prior Lions tour experience — someone who understands the demands, and Quick adaptability is crucial — otherwise, there's just a 10-day window to settle in. Test centurion Matt Giteau has voiced his confidence in Ben Donaldson.

Ben Donaldson and Tom Lynagh Lead Race for Wallabies

With first-choice flyhalf Noah Lolesio ruled out of the series after collar surgery, Donaldson and Tom Lynagh are the front-runners for the character for the initial Test in Brisbane on July 19. Giteau, who played at 10 and 12 for Australia during his 103 Tests, told AAP that Donaldson displayed adequate performance in the Wallabies' last-ditch win finished Fiji to be given his first start.

The Western Force star replaced Lolesio, who agonized from a whiplash injury in an attack, and Giteau was impressed by his self-possession as well as his skill throughout his 19 minutes on the field. With Noah unattainable, Ben Donaldson looks like the first-choice 10 to me, said Giteau, who is a representative for Lions Tour official sleep companion ResMed.

His obvious ability to carry, he keeps the defence predicting, and he's got a certainly good kicking game. When he came on for that partial time against Fiji, the Wallabies were up against the movement of the game, heavily, and he was intelligent enough to get their backbone on track. His penalty kick to the marginal with three minutes to go displayed a lot of courage, you know.

Stephen Larkham Confirms Brumbies Lineup for Historic British and Irish Lions Tour

Former Wallaby set to face the British and Irish Lions Tour for a second time after being named in the Brumbies squad. Brumbies head coach Stephen Larkham has named his matchday squad for their eagerly anticipated chance meeting with the British and Irish Lions in Canberra on Wednesday.

The Brumbies, regarded as Australia's top provincial side. There are several key players currently included in the Wallabies squad for the upcoming three-Test series against the iconic touring team. Neville’s inclusion highlights the strength of their lineup means he will accomplish the rare deed of facing the Lions for the second time. Having played contrary to them for the Melbourne Insurgents during their 2013 tour to Australia.

Despite the Lions securing a 35-0 victory over the Rebels 12 years ago. Neville still holds positive memories from that encounter. We had a tough night at AAMI Park,” he recalled. But the experience was unforgettable, and had rather a good sound. Unfluctuating with 10,000 people, he said. So, to put 27,000 in there was earsplitting. But it was a great feeling, really exhilarating.

Brumbies Stress Confidence, Execution Ahead of Major Tour Clash

We didn’t have much success on the scoreboard, but I remember almost everyone on our side gave it their all. I think back to the mix of players we had — some with Wallabies experience. Others who had never come close to that level, all getting the chance to take on such elite opposition. It was an incredible experience.

It's a fantastic opportunity to test your skills and put everything on the line. In the end, a side packed with seasoned internationals will always find ways to capitalize on any mistakes. As you'd expect from players of that caliber. But, you’ve just got to go in there and backbone yourself. And type sure you do your work well.

At 36, he’ll line up in the Brumbies’ second row alongside Lachie Shaw, while Michael Hooper features in the back row with Tuaina Taii Tualima and Rory Scott. Who will wear the captain’s armband up at some eight and on the openside edge, respectively? Meanwhile, Rhys van Nek and Lington Ieli are the preliminary props and will join Lonergan in the preliminary front row.

Brumbies Confirm Starting Backline for British and Irish Lions Tour Clash

Lonergan’s older colleague, Ryan, has been named as the Brumbies’ skipper and will form a half-back business with Declan Meredith, while David Feliuai and Ollie Sapsford will jump in the centres. The back three sees Andy Muirhead in receipt of the nod at full-back. While the Wallabies squad, British and Irish Lions Tour associates Corey Toole and Ben O’Donnell are the preliminary wingers.

Hooper, who came off the bench during the Wallabies' 21-18 victory over Fiji in Newcastle on Sunday. May line up alongside teammate Lachie for the first time as a specialist after the latter was named among the Brumbies stand-ins as the reserve lock. The other forward reserves are Liam Bowron, Cameron Orr, Feao Fotuaika, and Luke Reimer.

Tom Hooper’s clash with the Lions on Wednesday will be a memorable one. Marking his final game for the Brumbies before heading to Exeter. He’s among several players making key moves during the offseason. Larkham commended the development of the Hooper brothers and is content with the team’s planning for this tour match.

Lions Name Strong Side for Brumbies Clash with Itoje

It's been incredible to see how far both Tom and Lachie have come in recent years," he said. "What makes it even more meaningful is that they might share the field in a Brumbies jersey on Wednesday night — and not just in any game. But against a world-class side like the British and Irish Lions Tour, who only visit our shores once every 12 years.

They’ll be eager to make a strong impact and contribute fully to the team. The squad has been back in training for a few weeks now, and everyone understands just how significant this opportunity is — facing the Lions is a massive occasion. We’re under no misapprehensions about the challenge that lies in advance; they are an incredibly strong and commanding side.

Maro Itoje returns to head the British and Irish Lions Tour against the Brumbies on Wednesday. An important team that gives several clues as to Andy Farrell's thinking for the introductory Test against Australia on July 19. The Brumbies are given a 29-point start on the handicap but ended third in the 2025 Super Rugby Pacific table. The maximum of any Australian team, before being knocked out in the semi-finals.

Three British and Irish Lions Players Who Have Passed the Test 2025 Tour Standouts

With the 2025 British and Irish Lions tour well underway, most players have now had their chance to impress. Some have already booked their spots in the test side, while others face mounting pressure to prove their worth. Here’s a look at three standout performers and three still under scrutiny.

Finn Russell

Finn Russell’s transformation over the past few years has been remarkable. Once known for his high-risk, high-reward playing style, Russell has evolved into a mature player. A composed fly-half who brings structure without losing the creative spark that makes him so dangerous. On the British and Irish Lions tour 2025, he’s appeared as the strong favourite for the No. 10 shirt.

With a dominant forward pack providing a solid platform, Russell has orchestrated the attack with confidence. Mixing pinpoint spiral passes with clever tactical kicking, he’s no longer the chaos merchant of old. But rather a masterful game manager who still has the flair to unlock defences when needed. It’s hard to see anyone else starting at fly-half when the tests begin.

Maro Itoje

Maro Itoje continues to be the heartbeat of the British and Irish Lions’ forward pack. As tour captain, he has embraced both the leadership role and the responsibility of performing at the highest level. On the pitch, Itoje is everywhere disrupting breakdowns, leading defensive lines, and contributing to set-piece play. His ability to jack the ball at 6'6 is freakish, and his engine is unmatched.

While the lineout still requires fine-tuning, that’s a shared challenge and not a mark against Itoje individually. What stands out most is his consistency. Itoje doesn’t dip, he delivers. His presence in the test XV is as close to guaranteed as it gets on this tour.

Jack Conan

Jack Conan is, in conclusion, having the kind of tour that demands test choice. Long used as a high-impact substitute for Leinster, Ireland, and even in previous Lions series. Conan is now showing why he deserves to start. A true No. 8 in a sea of hybrid back-rowers, Conan offers the type of go-forward ball carrying and physical presence that test rugby thrives on.

He consistently makes hard metres and adds a dynamic threat around the fringes. While others vie for the six and seven shirts, Conan looks locked in at eight. His performances have been quietly dominant — the kind that coaches love because they simplify selection.

Three British and Irish Lions with Questions Still to Answer

Duhan van der Merwe

Duhan van der Merwe remains one of the most dynamic ball-carriers in world rugby. His explosive pace and physicality make him a constant threat with the ball in hand. Often demands multiple defenders just to bring him down. On this British and Irish Lions tour, he has continued to deliver offensively, consistently breaking tackles and creating chaos in wide channels.

However, test match rugby demands more than just attacking flair. With competition fierce in the back three, especially from the likes of James Lowe, who offers a more balanced all-around game. Van der Merwe needs to sharpen his kicking, aerial ability, and defensive work. In Lions selection, attack is often assumed; it’s the other facets of the game that separate starters from spectators.

Will Stuart

Will Stuart has built a reputation as one of England’s most reliable tighthead props, showing massive improvements in the past 18 months. His physicality and technical strong points in the scrum make him an appreciated asset. Under normal circumstances, he would have time to build into the tour.

Unfortunately, the Lions' setup doesn’t allow for slow starts. With Tadhg Furlong and Finlay Bealham both starting games where the British and Irish Lions conceded no scrum penalties. Stuart’s outing against the Reds, where the team gave away four, raised concerns.

Marcus Smith

Marcus Smith is undoubtedly one of the most talented playmakers in the northern hemisphere. However, on this tour, he’s been cast as a utility back rather than a specialist fly-half, which may hinder rather than help his chances. Finn Russell has all but secured the No. 10 jersey, and at fullback, Smith finds himself behind both Hugo Keenan and Blair Kinghorn in the pecking order.

The situation wasn’t helped by Elliot Daly’s outstanding form before injury. Smith’s natural creativity and attacking instincts are assets, but questions remain over his positional future in the test squad. Can he shine in a hybrid role, or is his brilliance better suited to a more defined position? The next few games will be crucial in answering that.
